Journey from Griz to Galakhudat: A Scenic Mountain Hike

Description

This moderately challenging hike offers clearly visible, well-marked trails. Begin with a 1.6 km walk to the village's edge, where a stunning canyon view awaits. After crossing a bridge 1.2 km ahead near Gurgur Waterfall, continue 2.5 km along the canyon rim to Kokosh Gorge. From there, descend slightly into the ravine, cross the river, and walk another 1.3 km to Galakhudat village, following the signs for guidance.

Proper outdoor clothing is essential for this hike. Special hiking equipment is unnecessary unless traveling in winter, when waterproof shoes are recommended. The trail is most vibrant with greenery from May to July, and snow-covered landscapes can be enjoyed in December through February. Check the weather before your trip, as rain, snow, or fog can make the path more challenging. Exercise caution during windy conditions, especially while descending into Kokosh Gorge. During May and September, be mindful of shepherd dogs guarding grazing sheep, and call the shepherd from a distance for safe passage.

Food and Accommodation

Although there are no restaurants or cafes in Griz or Galakhudat, guesthouses in both villages provide food and lodging. Their locations can be found on the map.

Villagers can provide water before you leave. Two springs are accessible along the route: one near the Kokosh Gorge river crossing and another further into the gorge, about 7 km from the start. However, avoid drinking from the latter during rain or snowmelt. It’s advisable to carry 1.5-2 liters of water, adjusted for weather conditions.

No special permissions are required to hike this trail. It does not pass through protected areas or border zones.

Perfect Hike Experience

I joined Guided Azerbaijan for this hike, and it was an incredible experience! Ali, our guide, was professional and patient, answering all our questions and sharing tips for crossing the river and navigating Kokosh Gorge. The vehicle was modern and clean, making the ride smooth. Ali even helped us interact with locals, who were very welcoming. The trail was moderately challenging, but the stunning views made every step worthwhile. I highly recommend both this trail and the company! Ahmed Saad 15.08.2023

Stunning canyon views

Our hike with Guided Azerbaijan was breathtaking! Elnara, our guide, was so friendly and knowledgeable about the trail and local history. The views of the canyon and Kokosh Gorge were absolutely stunning. The transport vehicle provided by the company was very comfortable, which made the journey to Griz relaxing. Elnara ensured we had enough water and helped us cross the river safely. The entire trip was well-organized, and I’d love to book another adventure with them. Linda Baker 07.06.2023

perfect place for rest

The hike from Griz to Galakhudat was incredible, but the windy sections near Kokosh Gorge made it a bit challenging. I really appreciated the trail markers and the guidance from Ali, our experienced guide. The canyon and waterfall were highlights, and the village of Galakhudat is a nice, quiet place to rest after the hike. Would definitely recommend it for those who are looking for an active and scenic adventure! Sarah 21.09.2023
