This moderately challenging hike offers clearly visible, well-marked trails. Begin with a 1.6 km walk to the village's edge, where a stunning canyon view awaits. After crossing a bridge 1.2 km ahead near Gurgur Waterfall, continue 2.5 km along the canyon rim to Kokosh Gorge. From there, descend slightly into the ravine, cross the river, and walk another 1.3 km to Galakhudat village, following the signs for guidance.
Proper outdoor clothing is essential for this hike. Special hiking equipment is unnecessary unless traveling in winter, when waterproof shoes are recommended. The trail is most vibrant with greenery from May to July, and snow-covered landscapes can be enjoyed in December through February. Check the weather before your trip, as rain, snow, or fog can make the path more challenging. Exercise caution during windy conditions, especially while descending into Kokosh Gorge. During May and September, be mindful of shepherd dogs guarding grazing sheep, and call the shepherd from a distance for safe passage.
Food and Accommodation
Although there are no restaurants or cafes in Griz or Galakhudat, guesthouses in both villages provide food and lodging. Their locations can be found on the map.
Villagers can provide water before you leave. Two springs are accessible along the route: one near the Kokosh Gorge river crossing and another further into the gorge, about 7 km from the start. However, avoid drinking from the latter during rain or snowmelt. It’s advisable to carry 1.5-2 liters of water, adjusted for weather conditions.
No special permissions are required to hike this trail. It does not pass through protected areas or border zones.

Hiking the trail from Griz to Galakhudat was a peaceful escape into nature. The well-marked paths and canyon views were unforgettable. Although I hiked independently, villagers were kind enough to provide water before I started. The two springs along the way were helpful, especially on a warm day. The descent into Kokosh Gorge was a bit tricky, but the views were worth it. This hike is perfect for those seeking tranquility and adventure. Maria Silva 22.05.2024
