Take a half-day cultural journey across the Absheron Peninsula and explore Azerbaijan’s ancient fire-worship traditions and natural gas wonders. This Absheron Peninsula tour from Baku offers a fascinating combination of history, geology, and spirituality — all within a short drive from the city center.
This day trip from Baku is ideal for travelers looking to experience the country's most symbolic and sacred fire-related sites.
📍 Ateshgah Temple (Fire Temple), Surakhani
Begin your Absheron Peninsula tour with a visit to the Ateshgah Fire Temple, located in the Surakhani settlement, about 30 km from Baku. Built during the 17th–18th centuries, the temple stands on the site of eternal flames caused by natural gas seeping through the earth.
The earliest surviving structure of the temple dates back to 1713.
The central altar was built in 1810 by merchant Kanchanagara.
Ateshgah served as a pilgrimage and philosophical center for Zoroastrians, Hindus, and Sikhs from the Northwestern Indian Subcontinent.
Worshippers honored the four sacred elements: fire (ateshi), air (badi), water (abi), and earth (heki).
In 1883, the temple ceased religious function due to the expansion of petroleum industries in Surakhani.
In 1975, it was officially transformed into a museum, which remains one of the most visited historical sites near Baku.
Whether you're interested in religious history or ancient trade routes like the Grand Trunk Road, the Ateshgah Temple tour from Baku is a must for cultural explorers.
📍 Yanardagh – The Burning Mountain
Next, continue your Absheron tour from Baku with a visit to Yanardagh, meaning “Burning Mountain.” This natural phenomenon is located in Mohammedi village, on the Absheron Peninsula near Baku, and is a truly unique sight.
The flames have burned continuously for centuries, fueled by underground natural gas seepage.
The origin of the fire is unknown, and unlike a volcano, it does not erupt, but instead burns steadily along the mountain slope.
Yanardagh burning mountain tour from Baku is an excellent chance to witness Azerbaijan’s nickname come to life — The Land of Fire.
This site is both mystical and photogenic, attracting those interested in geology, folklore, and natural wonders.

We did a trip to Gabala and a few other places on our first day in Baku. Our tour guide was Murad and he was so good and gave us such an incredible experience that we decided to book again for the next day to see the Fire Temple and the Fire Mountain with a few other stops along route. Fuad was our guide for that day and he was also superb. We learnt so much about Azerbaijan, its history and its culture that we simply would not have learnt had we had undertaken a more commercial trip. We were taken to authentic places and escaped the tourist traps. Honestly their service and our trips with them made our entire holiday. 5*'s are not enough for these guys. Thank you so much. Will definitely recommend to everyone I hear of going to Baku in the future! philippa089 November 12, 2018
I booked a private trip to go to Gabala (including lake and waterfall) and Sheki with two of my friends. Our guide was Murad and he was excellent, very friendly and knowledgeable and very fun to take a tour with. The tour was brilliant value for money, Murad took us to local food places that we would never have otherwise found and when I left my phone in his car he drove all the way back to my hotel to return it to me! We booked another trip to the mud volcanoes and to Gobustan and this time we went with Fuad. Fuad and Murad are brothers and are both amazing. They are such interesting and fun tour guides who really know a lot. They took us for amazing food that we would not have found ourselves. They both really went above and beyond and gave us a brilliant tour. If you want to see Baku or any of the rest of Azerbaijan book with these guys - they are the best! KatyH333 November 28, 2018
The organizer Fuad has made sure, that we got all information regarding the trip well in advance. The driver and the tour guide Nahira have picked us up with a comfortable van at the hotel. Nihara has answered all of our questions patiently and has helped us understanding the people and the town. After the trip we were droped of at a location in Baku which we had chosen. We were very happy the tour. Jürgen S. May 5, 2019
We covered Gobustan Museam, Rock Mountain, Mud Volcanos, Bibiheybat mosque, fire temple & fire mountain. Also did a short pit stop at the Haydar Aliyev centre for photos. We had only 1 day to go out of the city, and this private tour covered all the main attractions in one day and was very smoothly organised. Our guide Ayten was amazing - friendly and very knowledgable. If possible, request for Ayten to be your tour guide. Losini G May 6, 2019
We visited to Fire temple in little out of city center. Design of the building looks like a caravansarai and had some nice souvenir shops in outside of building. It was very interesting before times merchants and worshippers from different religions worshipped in same place. After Atashgahnwe went to Burning mountain. It was small but very unique for us. Museum no need to waste time, if your guide super informed you about the all. It is better to warm up front of fire 😁😁😁 KateRachell35 November 8, 2019
