Gobustan National Historical-Artistic Reserve is 60 km away from city center of Baku and
locates in south-eastern part of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. The complex of archeological monuments is preserved there. Let`s pay attention the etymology of Gobustan, before the name of this place was Kebristan. Kebr means fire worshiper, and stan means the place in Persian language, so its meaning is the place where the land of fire worshipers.
More than 6000 pictures on the rock (that called petroglyph) were found in Gobustan National Rock Reserve. Those mentioned pictures of animals, humans, natural life experiences, hunting, and dancing were carved over a span of thousands of years. Those pictures reflect the material and spiritual culture of the ancestors of the Azerbaijani people. Ancient dwellings – 20 caves, parking, 40 kurgans, more than 100 thousand items of material culture.
In 1966, Gobustan was declared as a reserve and now it is under the control of the Ministry of Culture & Tourism of Azerbaijan. The territory of the reserve is 4400 h. Gobustan reserve is famous as an historical-artistic reserve in the world. One of the main activities of this reserve is to organize the protection, study, and promotion of rock inscriptions (Petroglyphs), paintings, mounds, settlements. The reserve was inscribed on the UNESCO`s World Heritage List in 2007.
Since 2011, Petroglyphs Museum has been functioned in the reserve. The controversial Norvegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdal returned many times to Azerbaijan between 1961 and his death in 2002 to study the site in his search for Odin
The Gaval Dash is a natural musical stone which can only be found in Gobustan Rock Reserve. It stands at the entrance to the reserve, and is one of four “singing stones” found there.
300 of the planet’s estimated 700 Mud Volcanoes are located in Gobustan & Caspian Sea.
Mud Vulcanoes of Gobustan are a popular attraction for both scientists and tourists, the latter often bathing in mud, which is thought to have medicinal qualities. In April 2021, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex, which will cover the area of 12-hectares, and include quad-bike path, footpaths, a zip line and an observation Tower ( rasadkhana) a parking lot, a souvenir shop, as well as therapeutic baths.
