Tour Highlights: Gobustan Museum & Rock Mountains, Mud Vulcanoes, Bibiheybat Mosque, Fire Temple,Fire Mountain,Haydar Aliyev Cultural Center for the photos from outside

Excursion to the National Historical and Artistic Reserve Gobustan, you will see the old oil fields in the area of ”Bibi-Heybat,” admire the panorama of floating offshore oil platforms and racks, view rock art.

Gobustan is rock art and one of the most memorable sights of Azerbaijan. From the Azerbaijani language, the name translates as “Edge of ravines.” The reserve, created in 1966, is located just 50-60 km from Baku. The purpose of its creation was the protection and study of rock art (included in the UNESCO World Heritage List). Images counting a thousand-year history are a unique phenomenon for all of humanity. To date, there are about 6 thousand drawings: animals and people, hunting scenes and inscriptions created from the first era to the Middle Ages.

Mud Vulcanoes

The largest mud volcano in the Gobustan reserve – Kanizadag. Most of the volcanoes are low mud geysers, including those below the height of an adult, look like gurgling elevations. Mud volcanoes are active all year round.

Bibiheybat Mosque

The history of the Bibi Heybat mosque, located on the south-western outskirts of Baku, began in the 13th century. The ancient temple, which successfully survived many wars and political turmoil, was ruthlessly destroyed from the architectural landscape of the capital of Azerbaijan by the godless “wave” of the 1930s. Modern Bibi Heybat, the heiress of its glorious medieval ancestor, was built in 1999 according to old sketches. However, taking into account the modern realities, the new complex made more than its predecessor.

Fire Temple (Ateshgah)

Zoroastrian temple of fire worshipers Ateshgah (“House of Fire”) is located in the village of Surakhani, 25 km from Baku. It is built on the site of the “eternal” inextinguishable fires, the so-called “seven pit temples” – the natural exits of burning gases. The first Zoroastrian temple complex was built here in about the III century, but these buildings are not preserved.

The surviving church dates back to the 17th century and consists of low buildings, monastic cells, a small caravanserai and other buildings surrounding the closed courtyard. In its center is a small temple with arches, built on the site of the fire. Currently, the complex has been turned into a museum, which tourists enjoy visiting.

Fire Mountain ( Yanardagh)

Not far from Baku there is a great mountain, which tourists must visit. This mountain is called Yanardag, which means “burning mountain.” And indeed fire is coming out of the mountain, this is natural gas, which is in the depths of the mountain, has found a way out and is burning, and this fire has been burning for thousands of years. Neither rain nor bad weather can extinguish this fire, it always burns and only on this slope.

Haydar Aliyev Cultural Center

The architect of this center is the world-famous British architect Zaha Hadid. A unique modern structure will shake you; there are no straight lines in the building, no corners as if woven from waves that soared up and quietly sank to the ground.

Step Back in Time

The day started with Nurlan, the guide, and our driver picking me up at my hotel. It’s a nice touch and I appreciated it. We drove out to Gobustan to see the mud volcanos and the rock art. We stopped at an intersection to pick up a taxi to take us out to the mud volcanos. It was this little purple Lada that had to be as old as me, and I’m not young. It felt a little sketchy at first, but go with it - it’s one of the funnest parts of the day. You bounce around this unpaved, heavily rutted/washed out area to get to the volcanos. You hike up the side of the volcano just a little and you can hear that “blurb blurb” sound of pockets of air escaping through the mud. It’s fantastic. And the view out to the Caspian Sea is amazing. We head back and pick up our car and drive over to the museum and petroglyphs. From everything found in this area, archeologists have been able to piece together the story of this region reaching back thousands and thousands of years. Standing in a place with such deep roots in history and the evidence of the people who have lived there… it will reach into you. Especially as Nurlan is there to give you so much insight and context to everything. And a strong arm when you need a hand in a few of the tougher spots during the hike. On the way back to Baku we were able to stop at for prayers (if so inclined) and then headed out to Ateshgah to visit the Fire Temple. Again - this is one of those places so full of history - and Nurlan really provides great information without making you feel like your in a lecture. It’s a great conversation. We left there and headed to Yanar Dag to see the live fire that still burns as the heart of Azerbaijan. I had a moment here. It was peaceful and calm and a little rainy. I sat and watched the flames and felt so connected to a moment in history. On the way back to the hotel we made a stop at the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center to appreciate the architecture of this beautiful, female-designed building. And really, I <3 Baku. Thanks Fuad for letting Nurlan be my guide for the day, he’s amazing at what he does. MsMely November 2, 2021

An absolutely fantastic day out with a fantastic guide.

After a wonderful trip with Guided Azerbaijan prior to this, we decided to use them again for this trip. We're so glad we made this decision. Elnara, who was our guide, was amazing. Starts out by going to Gobuston. The museum is excellent - informative without being overkill. Elnara, helped to bring it to life further. The park itself is fascinating and not to be missed, and the surrounding landscape moonlike. Then it goes to nearby mud volcanoes via a Larder which is a fun bumpy ride. These volcanoes are very intriguing. The views from here are also spectacular. The trip goes back into the city, via the beautiful mosque, and then to the fire temple and fire mound. Both sights are also interesting. The temple has a unique history, which Elnara explained very clearly. The tour ends at the architecturally stunning cultural centre. Whilst these places are all worth seeing, Elnara brought them all to life. As well as being knowledgeable, Elnara was extremely accommodating and friendly throughout. It should be noted that I was not feeling too well throughout the tour. Elnara kept checking up on me to see if I was ok, and we even made a detour to the beach to give me some fresh air which helped me carry on throughout the day. Strongly recommended. Would advise taking sun cream/lotion Stumodernart September 20, 2022
